WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
It would be great if I had a dramatic personal experience where chiropractic saved my life or at least gave it back to me, but I don’t. However, chiropractic has helped me to maintain the good health that I have been blessed with.
Let me start by telling you how I became a chiropractor. I always wanted to be a doctor. As a youth, I looked at different professions and careers but nothing interested me like medicine. At first, I didn’t know what kind of doctor I wanted to be. I just knew I loved medicine. So I went to college and was a pre-med major. During the first few years of college, I worried a bit about becoming a medical doctor. I wanted to be a surgeon, but I had the impression (which may be somewhat false) that surgeons performed many unnecessary surgeries. I considered obstetrics, but I didn’t want to be on-call all the time. Most importantly, I didn’t like the heavy dependence on drug treatment.
While I was struggling with these questions (deciding on a career is a scary time for a young person) I interviewed a few chiropractors. Wow, did I like what I heard! Everything seemed to click for me. I had finally found my direction and I soon found myself in chiropractic college. An interesting thing happened during my first three months in chiropractic school. The more I learned about chiropractic, the more I realized that I hadn’t understood what it was. I had based my decision to switch on a limited understanding of the discipline. Fortunately, the more I learned, the more I loved it. Chiropractic was far more than I had realized. To this day it continues to impress me.
Especially important was the natural approach to healing: tapping into the body’s natural ability to heal; healing without using drugs; finding the cause of disease; treating the problem, not the symptoms; and using nutrition all seemed correct and appealed to me.
I became a chiropractor to help people, and I have enjoyed the opportunities to do so. I have had thousands of patients over the course of 16 years. Many of these were simple cases, but many involved significant complexity. My ability to help these more challenging cases has increased over time (as it should for any doctor). I haven’t helped each one, but I have seen lives changed. It is very rewarding to receive their thanks.
So now you know a little about the passion I have for chiropractic - not just for the healing that comes by adjusting patients, but for the healing we are able to do with all the tools available to us.
The rest of the chapter on chiropractic covers:
What is chiropractic
How adjusting (or manipulating) the spine heals people
The difference between illness and injury
Therapies chiropractors use along with the adjustment
How much treatment will you need - Do you have to treat forever? (of course not)
Do chiropractors claim to fix everything? (of course not)
Chiropractic education
What conditions chiropractors treat
What you can expect when you visit the chiropractor
Many people think Chiropractors just adjust the spine, but we do far more. There are a number of conditions that are treated by a simple adjustment. There also are a number of conditions that require additional therapy. Physical therapy, nutritional counseling, ergonomic training, supports, and lifestyle modifications are among the tools we use to heal patients. These conditions and their therapies are the bulk of the rest of this book.
